When: August 15-19

How Much: Open to the public

With the constant flood of things to do in Austin, it’s sometimes easy to forget the pleasures of simpler activities – like a little late summer reading. Thankfully, The Texas Book Festival is upon us so we have the opportunity to pick up a few page turners while we hob nob with some literary talent!

In honor of the fest, several of Austin’s bars, including Weather Up, Small Victory and The Dogwood have banded up to created some Literary Libations. Our personal favorite is Justin Lavenue of The Roosevelt Room’s homage to Moby Dick, “Ahab’s Odyssey” – a whale of a cocktail made with Bombay Sapphire Gin, white grapefruit-lime cordial, Cubeb berry-infused manzanilla sherry, Capillaire syrup, Bolivian rose salt water and wine tannins. Get it this week only!

Austin’s own punk rock goddess Sabrina Ellis of Sweet Spirit and A Giant Dog is putting on the chef’s apron this weekend for one of Eden East’s multiple course, farm-to-table meals. Safe to assume, she’ll dominate like any other rockstar chef.

For the sixth year in a row, Austin’s best chefs face-off in a contest around what might as well be recognized as the capital city’s signature dish – queso. Really though, one of the legit most common things to do in Austin is to binge on a giant gooey bowl of this delicious melted cheese.

Jack Allen’s Kitchen‘s executive chef of the Round Rock location, John Sumner, along with his killer quesos, will be joined by 30 other participants competing for the best queso. Grab a bag of chips for $5 and dig in!

All donated canned goods will benefit the Central Texas Food Bank! Good cause? We think so!

They say you can fight fire with fire so you may as well fight heat with heat. You can definitely do so by sampling over 350 different kinds of hot sauce this Sunday at The Austin Chronicle’s Annual Hot Sauce FestivalJacoby’s Restaurant & Mercantile‘s sous chef Austin Ewald, will be giving his professional opinion on the best of the best as one of the judges.

In addition to all the hot sauce you could want (literally), you’ll find eats from Amy’s Ice Creams, Curra’s Grill, Mighty Cone and many others. While those tastebuds are burning, you can treat your ears to some live music from Joe King Carrasco and more!
